Purpose of Study

PSHCE is a vital part of the curriculum as it raises student awareness about the world in which they live and the challenges they face once they leave the safety net of Little Lever School. It addresses real-life issues every lesson and gives students the chance to share their own experiences of life to date, as well as learn from the experiences of their peers. It encompasses a wide spectrum of topical issues that can give pupils the essential skills for better life management and staying safe, whilst developing the personal qualities of endeavour, leadership and communication. Although a non-statutory subject, PSHCE plays a pivotal role in addressing the statutory content outlined in the National Curriculum today. These are based around the core areas of Drug Education, Financial Education, Sex and Relationship Education and the importance of physical activity and diet for a Healthy Lifestyle. Outside of these statutory areas, it also plays a key part in making pupils aware of social issues that are prevalent in their local and wider communities, highlighting any dangers that may exist as well as the positive initiative to involve themselves in. Furthermore, PSHCE also offers students the opportunity to extend their social skills through extended discussion sessions, as well as playing a key role in developing the leadership, confidence, initiative and perseverance skills that are so critical for students as they approach higher education and employment.

About the Department

Little Lever School delivers a diverse programme of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) that addresses many of the issues young people encounter in today’s world. It is taught from years 7 to 11 through Edge time each week, the assembly programme and across schemes of work in all subject areas. The programme includes careers, work-related learning, and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) provision.
