Trips

To commemorate the centenary of World War One we have taken year 10 and 11 students to the First World War battlefields in Belgium and France.  Whilst being relevant to the Key Stage 4 curriculum, the trips have had a profound effect on the students, allowing them to understand more deeply the impact of the war on people’s lives and to gain a greater sense of their own past.

How do we study?

We believe that developing independent learning skills is key to students’ learning in history.  We foster this using a variety of teaching methods. Students work individually, in pairs and in groups, they are encouraged to ask questions and investigate.

Our aims

In the history department we strive to help our students discover how the world has evolved and to develop an understanding of both the past and the present. Our aim is to develop students with the ability to question, express opinions and make judgements. We want our students to think for themselves and be able to understand the events and actions of individuals in the past.

 

Our Key Stage 3 scheme of learning aims to develop students’ historical knowledge, their skills and their understanding of the concepts used in History. We contribute to the developments of students’ literacy skills as this is one of the keys to success in our subject.

We investigate the past through a variety of different topics, such as conflict, danger and past lives; as well as through different time periods, including the medieval period, the Tudors and Stuarts and the twentieth century world.

Year 7 – We explore the Stone Age, the Norman Conquest and Medieval England and the first Tudor monarchs

Year 8 – We develop students’ knowledge of the Tudors by researching life in Elizabethan England. We continue by studying the Stuarts and the Industrial Revolution. We also consider the development of the slave trade.

Year 9 - In the final year at Key Stage 3 we hope to capture students’ imagination by exploring more sinister topics such as Jack the Ripper. We study twentieth century focusing on key events such as the World Wars, and the rise of the dictators in Europe.

History is studied in two 50 minute periods a week.

2015 – 60% of students gained A*-C grades at GCSE

History is a popular option at Key Stage 4.

Currently we follow the AQA Modern World History. We develop the skills students have already acquired at Key Stage 3.

There are three units.

Unit 1 - International relations between 1900 and 1939. We focus on the causes of World War One, peace –making after the war and Hitler’s foreign policy leading to the Second World War

Unit 2 – Twentieth century depth studies. Our in depth studies include the USA in the 1920’s and 1930’s,and the Vietnam War.

Unit 3 - The students investigate an aspect of World War One and World War Two during their preparation for their controlled assessment

History at GCSE is studied in three 50 minute periods.
