Design Technology

The Design Technology Department is made up of a team of staff dedicated to developing students’ skills and understanding in order to become independent problem solvers, working in a creative and innovative way, in a variety of skill based areas. Students are encouraged to produce high quality outcomes, using practical skills in Food Preparation & Nutrition, Resistant Materials and Graphic Design. It is our aim to help students develop an understanding of the social, cultural and moral issues of design through investigating real life design situations, target markets and industrial practices. These skills can be further developed at KS4 and provide pupils with practical life skills, as well as preparing them for success in a range of different career opportunities.

Design Technology within school always proves popular with the pupils as we have a range of subjects on offer at key stage 3. The pupils follow a rotation system, completing projects in Food Preparation and Nutrition, Resistant Materials and Graphic Design. In these areas they will develop skills in research, design, making and evaluating. Each project they undertake centers on a final practical outcome, which the students are always keen to take home. This Year we will also be offering a range of extra-curricular activities across all the areas of technology. 

Design Technology at key stage 4 is a popular option offering pupils the chance to gain GCSEs or vocational qualifications in Graphic Design, Resistant Materials, Food Preparation & Nutrition and Food & Cookery. The students will build on and develop skills that they have covered at key stage 3, but ultimately aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of subject knowledge and present students with more challenging, rigorous outcomes.

NCFE Level 2 Technical Award in Graphic Design

“Graphic design is a form of visual communication. It is the process by which visual information is given form and structure to communicate a message.

Being a graphic designer is the profession of visual communication that combines images, words and ideas to convey information to an audience. It involves designing print or electronic forms of visual information for advertisement, publication or a website.

Graphic design should not be confused with art and design or product design. It is distinct from these subjects and should be treated as so.

The NCFE Level 2 Technical Award in Graphic Design complements GCSE qualifications. It is aimed at 14-16 year olds studying Key Stage 4 curriculum who are interested in any aspect of graphic design, including sourcing ideas and design.

This qualification focuses on an applied study of the graphic design sector and learners will gain a broad understanding and knowledge of working in the sector.”

NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Food and Cookery

 “This qualification is designed for learners with an interest in food and cookery. It will provide learners with experience of using different cooking techniques and methods to enable them to use these within further education or apprenticeships. It will give them a basic understanding of the skills required for a career in food.

This qualification aims to:

focus on an applied study of the food and cookery occupational area

offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a significant core of knowledge and theoretical content with broad-ranging applicability

provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:

prepare and cook using basic skills

understand food and its functions in the body and in recipes

understand balanced diets and modification of recipes for health

plan and produce dishes for a purpose.

 

GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

“The WJEC Eduqas GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition equips learners with the knowledge,  understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages learners to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

By studying food preparation and nutrition, learners will:

be able to demonstrate effective and safe cooking skills by planning, preparing and cooking a variety of food commodities whilst using different cooking techniques and equipment

develop knowledge and understanding of the functional properties and chemical characteristics of food as well as a sound knowledge of the nutritional content of food and drinks

understand the relationship between diet, nutrition and health, including the physiological and psychological effects of poor diet and health

understand the economic, environmental, ethical and socio-cultural influences on food availability, production processes, diet and health choices

demonstrate knowledge and understanding of functional and nutritional properties, sensory qualities and microbiological food safety considerations when preparing, processing, storing, cooking and serving food

understand and explore a range of ingredients and processes from different culinary traditions (traditional British and international) to inspire new ideas or modify existing recipes
